Communication is the Key to Success.
A huge banner with these words is one of my earliest memories of Leo when we first met over three decades ago. At 18 years old, we were navigating the emotional roller coaster of university life without parents nearby, and Leo already stood out as the wise owl among us.
She had pinned this motto over her door in response to a conflict, recognising that any similar tussle thereafter could be mitigated by honest, two-way dialogue. This set the stage for what has now become a 30-year friendship anchored in raw honesty and openness.
Leo has walked alongside me through the highs and lows of every season of life—from parents divorcing, moving countries, and changing careers, to navigating painful relationships, pregnancy losses, and the joys of marriage and family. More recently, our individual spiritual journeys have brought new depths of debate and dialogue that I truly value.
Through all of these seasons, I have never met anyone with Leo’s degree of emotional intelligence. She possesses an intuitive ability to sense when something is amiss and to frame questions that get straight to the nub of a problem. On occasion, this has been challenging for me—particularly since my instinct is to bury my head in the sand rather than face conflict head-on—but upon reflection, her intervention has been integral to my personal growth and well-being.
